Second Two-Alarm Commercial Fire in a row

By Truck Lieutenant Tom Wood
April 2, 2006

At 1556, while T511 was still picking up from the Gainesville Christmas Gallery fire, W511, W501, and T511 were dispatched to Box 1111 for a fire alarm at 7401 Sudley Road, TGI Fridays. While units were responding, Prince William Communications upgraded the assignment and reported a working fire. W511 arrived on the scene with smoke showing and advanced a line into the kitchen area. C511 arrived on the scene and established command. After a fast pickup and response from Gainesville, T511 arrived on the scene and was ordered to vent the roof.

E508, returning from a transfer to Fairfax County during a 2-alarm fire there, arrived and picked up W511's supply and ran a backup line. C501 was assigned Operations and AC511 assumed "interior" shortly thereafter. W501 arrived and was initially assigned the RIT, and later to assist with extinguishment. W525 arrived and took a third handline into the main area of the restaurant to check for extension.

Command special-called Tower 501 to the scene to assist. Upon arrival, TWR501 sent a crew to the roof to assist with the roof ventilation. The second crew began opening up void spaces on the outside walls and extinguishing fire there with help from W501.

W511's crew advanced a handline into the kitchen area and through a scuttle into a void space above the freezers, where they extinguished a considerable amount of fire. T511 opened a main vent hole directly above the void space, improving heat and visibility conditions for the Wagon. Assisted by TWR501, several additional inspection holes were made to ensure the fire hadn't spread around the parapet.

The weekend crews were relieved at approximately 1830 by the Sunday night crew, which remained on the scene for another hour overhauling and picking up.

SJVFD extends its thanks to the crews who assisted in extinguishing this fire.
