House Fire at Shift Change

By Assistant Chief Tom Wood
April 27, 2013

At 0813, as C Crew was relieving the Friday Night crew, units from Stonewall, Manassas, Manassas Park, Yorkshire, Bristow, and Lake Jackson were dispatched to Box 1112 for a reported house fire on Nimitz Court. Callers reported the deck of a single family home on fire. As units from SJVFD turned out of the station, a column of smoke was visible.

E511B arrived on the scene and reported heavy fire from the rear and stretched a line to the front door. T511 and E511B entered together and found that the deck fire had extended into the first floor and was also extending into the attic. As E511B went to work on the fire on the first floor, E501 entered with a backup line and advanced to the second floor with R501 and T511. BC501Y (McEvilly) established Nimitz Command.

TWR501 arrived and went directly to the roof, opening vent holes in three areas above the fire, improving visibility and heat conditions inside.

E509B assumed the RIT, as E508B entered to assist on the first floor and E525B ran a line to the rear, extinguishing the rest of the deck fire and the entering the basement through the rear to extinguish fire in the laundry room.

Command special-called two additional engines as crews were running low on air but still had stubborn fire in the attic space and voids. Engines from Buckhall and Gainesville responded and took over activities while crews rotated out and through rehab, established by A511, M511, and A525B.

After about an hour, the fire was extinguished. Units remained on the scene until approximately 1100 conducting salvage and overhaul and assisting the homeowner to retrieve personal effects. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
