By Firefighter Nick Kelly
November 23, 2008

In the early morning hours of November 23, the coverage crew for E510 (Kelly, Miller, Potter, Collins using E511B) were called to assist on a MVC with entrapment and fire on Interstate I-95 southbound, just north of the Quantico exit.

AC503 arrived on scene first and found 2 vehicles off the right shoulder, with one vehicle heavily involved with fire. Bystanders had removed the driver of one vehicle, but reported to AC503 that they had not seen anyone get out of the second vehicle, which was on fire. With the possibility of additional victims and having one ALS patient, AC503 requested 2 additional engines, one for water supply and one for an LZ, bringing E511B and E531 from Quantico MCB. Initial arriving units (E503B, M503, A503, R508 [covering for R510], BC507 [Young]) knocked down the bulk of the fire and performed a quick search of the both vehicles which proved to be negative. ALS care for the victim removed from the vehicle by bystanders was provided and the patient was flown to Fairfax Hospital by Life-Evac. Both vehicles did sustain heavy fire damage. BC507 had I-95 command.

Upon arrival BC507 directed E511B to supply E503B with tank water and assist E503B's crew in confirming there were no additional victims and extinguishment of remaining fire. A back-up line was deployed from E511B and all remaining fire was quickly extinguished. A thorough search using the thermal imaging camera proved negative for additional victims.

The driver of the second vehicle was seen running away from the wreck by witnesses prior to units arriving on scene and was never found.

Units: Initial Dispatch: E503B, M503, A503, R508, AC503, BC507 (Young) Special Alarm: E511B (Water Supply), E531 (LZ Pumper), Life-Evac 1 (Medevac)
