Membership Options
We are looking for members to serve in a variety of roles. If you have the desire to serve your community and are interested in joining our organization, we encourage you to contact our Human Resources team. Please read about the ways you can become part of our family of volunteers.
Operational Members
The department's focus is providing fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services to the community at large. Our Operational Members are on the front line providing these services as Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians. The time commitment is considerable, but so is the satisfaction you'll receive!
Membership averages about 70 hours each month, including
- One regular weekday shift, overnight:
- Monday–Friday: 1800–0600 (Nights Staffed Depends on the crews)
- One weekend shift
- Annual Fire or EMS Physical Agility Test
- Monthly company business meeting, second Tuesday of every month
- Required training classes:
- CPR
- Infection Control
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Critical Incident Stress Management
- Firefighter Level I or EMT-Basic Certification (you are welcome and encouraged to do both, but must complete at least one)
- Periodic station-wide drills (typically twice a year on a weekend day)
Administrative Members
Do you want to help us out and be involved but are not interested in serving as an EMT or Firefighter? We are in need of Administrative Members with experience in, or a desire to help with:
- Fund Raising Activities
- Office Skills
- Recruitment Activities
- Organizational Skills
- "What Would You Like to Do?" Skills
General Membership Requirements
(applies to Operational AND Administrative Members)
The general requirements for membership, as described by our bylaws, are paraphrased below:

Any person 18 years or older in good health (SJVFD does not have a Junior Member program)

A candidate must be free from:
- excessive use of alcohol

use of drugs other than for treatment as prescribed by a licensed doctor of medicine

dishonorable discharge from any police department, fire department or any armed forces.

All applicants shall demonstrate that they are either

Successfully pass a DMV check conducted by the station

Successfully pass a criminal background check conducted by the station

Have a medical physical complete by an authorized station physician
