Having a specialty piece of apparatus in the station requires that we have specially trained and equipped responders as well. Our latest initiative at Station 11 is to improve our capabilities in responding to a variety technical rescue incidents, be they auto-extrication, confined space, high-angle rescue, swift water rescue, trench rescue or collapse rescue situations. |
It is not by accident that Truck 511 is equipped for high angle rescue and auto-extrication operations. As part of the West End technical rescue task force, the truck could be dispatched to any number of rescue target hazards; including water towers, industrial sites, rock quarries, Interstate 66, or the tallest building in the county. T511 carries over 1500’ of certified lifeline rope as well as various rigging and hauling systems, to include a pre-rigged stokes basket capable of being deployed at a moments notice. For extrication and unique technical rescue incidents T511 carries a full complement of Hurst® extrication equipment to include: 40” Spreaders, “O” Cutters, a Combination Cutter/Spreader, Rams and an on-board and portable power supply unit. T511 is also equipped with a variety of stabilization equipment including: Res-Q® jacks, Vetter® high pressure lift bags and an abundance of cribbing. For situations requiring advanced or non-traditional techniques for gaining access T511 also carries a Petrogen® cutting torch, two reciprocating saws, two chainsaws, a circular saw, two K-12 saws and an assortment of Paratech® air tools. |

SHVFD has recently kicked off a new initiative to dramatically improve our technical rescue capability with the assignment of a Technical Rescue Coordinator. The technical rescue improvement program has brought Rope Rescue I and II, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, and Vehicle Rescue to Station 11. These classes have yielded more than 50 new certifications within the membership. Also, in the near future SHVFD will be opening a second station which will house a collapse unit, further solidifying the demand for technical rescue training at Station 11. |
Technical Rescue in Prince William County |
At this time there is no regional technical rescue team in the county, but there are a number of assets available for technical rescue operations and the departments that maintain these assets are work and train together.
While Truck 511 is adequately equipped for high-angle rescues and auto extrication, any technical rescue is manpower and equipment intensive, so we could not handle a significant incident alone. A typical technical rescue response for the west end of Prince William County could include Engine 511 or Wagon 511, Truck 511, Rescue Squad 504 or 508, Medic 551, a Battalion Chief, and the first due engine and ambulance. This ensures an initial response of at least 17 personnel to any technical rescue incident. |
Adding to the impressive resources available within the county, dedicated to the West End of the county are Rescue 501, Rescue 504 and Rescue 508. Rescue 501, located in the City of Manassas, is outfitted for high-angle and confined space rescues and they have special response trailers for building collapse and trench rescue. A request by communications to Company 1 Fire will also bring significant HazMat capabilities to any scene. Company 1 Rescue also operates the only dive rescue team in the county, made up of career and volunteer firefighters and police officers from the City of Manassas. |

Rescue 504 is outfitted primarily for vehicle extrication, as they are dispatched to the interstate most often, but they also carry a large amount of equipment for trench or building collapse rescue, as well as Supplied Air Breathing Apparatus (SABA) and other equipment for confined space entry. Rescue 508, the newest heavy rescue in the county, carries a similar assortment of equipment, ensuring the west end is prepared for any type of technical rescue incident.
On the East End of the county, Rescue Squads 502, 503, and 510 combine with Trucks 512, 513 and 514 to provide additional technical rescue services. |
