Of course, just arriving on a scene in a fire truck or ambulance is never enough. It's the equipment we carry on board that really matters.
Personal Protective Ensemble
Each member is issued a full set of turnout gear, including coat, pants, hood, and gloves. Currently we issue Morning Pride fire gear.
Helmets
For firefighting duties we issue members either the Cairns 660C Metro or the Cairns 1040 defender. Eventually when the uniform rank structure is fully implemented, every member, from red hat to line officer will recieve a cairns 1040 defender. The color and markings on the helmets denote the rank and qualifications of each firefighter. We also carry a number of Cairns low profile rescue helmets on T-11 for rescue work.
SCBA
SHVFD uses MSA Firehawk, and with 45 minute compressed air cylinders.

Power Tools
Truck 11 is a rolling toolbox. In addition to every hand tool we can justify, we carry a variety of power tools for rescue and extrication.
- Hurst ML-16S Maverick combination cutter-spreader
- DeWalt tool set
- DeWalt 938 cordless reciprocating saws
- Air wrench set
- Paratech Air Hammer
Saws
T-511 carries three power saws, including two identical Unifire PS-20 chainsaws with Razzoo chains, and a Stihl circular saw that we normally carry set up with a metal cutting blade.
Thermal Imager
In November 2000 we put in service an MSA Evolution 4000 Thermal Imaging Camera. The day after it was placed on T-11, firefighters crawling into a working house fire with the camera saw a large hole in the floor that had not been visible through the smoke. In the following week it was used at several more incidents, including to augment searches at 2 working fires, to detect hotspots during mop-up of a 3-alarm fire, and to rapidly search a large wooded area for a possible ejected victim at an auto accident. In our minds, the camera has already paid for itself. Coming soon...photo and SHVFD Thermal Imager Training Outline!
